Need some advice

A friend has asked me to make a table runner as a gift for her mother.  She selected the fabric below and I have absolutely no idea how to quilt it!IMG_7688 It is just the two pieces of fabric and nothing else.  I am under the impression that her mother’s taste is contemporary.  So, here is today’s challenge question:  How would you quilt it?  The border is about 3” finished and the center portion is roughly 12” wide.  I know it looks wrinkly in the photo but the borders are squared off.  I am ready to do this since she has to have it by Mother’s Day…and I have to mail it.
I am open to any and all suggestions.  Thanks!!

  1. Just my opinion, but you asked...I would do some meanandering with little loops all around the border and for the center...see the repeating pattern where stripes are made? I would do some geometric pattern in the strips.

  2. I would be inclined to straight line quilting - tightly spaced -running perpendicular to what looks like a stripe in the center fabric. To me that would seem more "contemporary" than anything shaped or swirly.

But I bet no matter what you do it will be gorgeous!

  3. Loops--rounded more than oval---to mimic the polka dots....suggestion...what ever you decide will look great I am sure.

  4. No advice from here, but I'm anxious to see what others say! Choosing a quilting design is my LEAST favorite thing to do cuz I lack confidence in that area.

  5. I wouldn't quilt it at all. It's not big enough. Probably however you quilt it, the corners will curl up.

  6. I would quilt the center parallel to the lines in the fabric (@ 1/4 inch apart). I would quilt the border 1/4 inch from the seam & 1/4 inch from that, etc.

Yes, it would be quilted to death, but the heavy quilting would give reason the very plain piecing...

  7. Perhaps shashiko? That would give that gold fabric some nice texture...

Thanks for your assuring words on my choice of quilting motif on my presents block. As for the sashing, you and I have the same idea!

    Happy Quilting.

  8. Some form of large motif in the middle and then straight parallel lines in the borders. Have a search on Wholecloth Quits for inspiration

  9. I think I'd do about three or four large interlacing diamonds in the center and then some easy meandering in the border. In my opinion it doesn't need a lot of quilting. With the stripes in the center fabric, I think a diamond pattern could add some interesting texture. I'm sure whatever you decide to do will be fantastic!

  10. Hi Suzan,

Thanks for visiting! :) Yes, Gwen's Stars will always been extra special. I am getting the scraps from Barbara to make a matching doll quilt for the doll. :)

  11. Something very geometric, like a greek key in the borders and parallel lines running perpeticular to the grain in the center. But then again, I am the world's worst at picking quilting designs. I'm sure what you do will be lovely.
