Something new in the stores

***EDITED 7/24/09 - I have had some response about the Rotary Cutting Machine and the consensus is DON'T BUY IT!!***

Well, maybe it is just new to me because I had not seen them before. ANYWAY, has anyone purchased the Simplicity Rotary Cutting Machine and/or the Simplicity Bias Tape Maker?

The bias tape thingy isn't something I would really need but that rotary cutting machine looks cool. Everyone knows I HATE cutting...and I love using 2-1/2" strips of fabric. This baby looks like it could make me very happy. On sale at Fabric Depot it is only $55. The retail price is $74.99. They have the 50% off one item coupon at Joann's right now. I think I could "justify" spending the bucks on that baby.

SO - if you have bought one, please let me know what you think. I have a coupon burning a hole in my pocket!!

  1. I don't mind cutting regular strips. I wonder if you have to open up the fabric to 44 wide to cit the strips? However, it could be wicked cool for busting out strips from scraps. One pass through my scraps could make it worth while. Pay for itself.

  3. I just saw that rotary cutting machine in the Joann's add. I was wondering if it was any good because if it is I'll be buying one. I can't cut straight. The problem with the 50% off coupon is the machine is on sale so you can't use it right now, or at least that's how I understand the coupons.

  4. The only problem I see is that the strip cutter cuts pinked edges. I can never sew an accurate 1/4" seam with pinked edges. I know from experience using jelly roll strips. As for the bias tape maker, you can buy a little doo-dad that folds the strip as you slide it through. A lot cheaper than Simplicity's machine, I'm sure, and quite effective. You get the strip started through the gizmo and pull it along the strip of fabric following closely behind with your steam iron as you move across your ironing board.

  5. I looked at the rotary cutting machine yesterday at Joann's and almost bought it. It has two cutters - one straight line and one pinked for edging. Personally, I could probably cut the 2 and 1/2 strips faster than this machine. But, as Jen pointed out - it would be great with scraps. Sounds like I'm trying to talk myself into it?

  6. Hi Suzan,

I saw that in a magazine - does that work? Let us know once you have a chance to play with it! :)

It's great to hear from you again. Thanks for visiting.

  7. Now this looks like a great gadget. I can't wait to see if it works and is worth it. I'm off to Joanns later....will check it out there....

  8. I bought one, used it and promptly returned it. I can cut fabric far more accurately and quicker just using my good ol' fashioned rotary cutter.

  9. I bought one of the strippers (Simplicity) yesterday. It is a piece of crap. I am a longarm quilter and thought OH! something to help me with my time. "NO" way. It is cheaply made, sitting at a table the foot pedal doesn't even touch the floor. Very poor product! I took it back today. I can buy lots of blades for the price this garbage cost. Thanks for letting me vent. impatienc@yahoo.com

  10. I bought one and so far have not been impressed. I have tendenitis in my elbow and have pain if I rotary cut through more then 2 pieces of fabric at a time. I think I can work faster and more accurately using a rotary cutter and taking things slow then using this machine.

  11. I also bought one and not impressed at all. Save your money. It doesn't cut straight at all. It grabs the material and jerks it so its really hard to feed with the fabric going all over the place. i am a horrible cutter....thats why I bought it....but I can cut straighter and crisper than this stupid thing. I am stuck with mine because I lost the receipt.
